Steam room or sauna

A steam room is wet heat: the air is close to 100 percent humidity and the temperature is lower than in a sauna, often around 110 to 120°F. A Finnish sauna is hotter and drier, and you add steam by pouring water on the stones. A Russian banya sits in between, with a hot, humid room and the leafy venik.

Where public steam rooms are

Most public steam rooms are part of a bathhouse or a spa with a day pass, so you get a sauna and often a cold pool as well. Korean spas usually have steam rooms in the single-gender areas, and hammams are built around warm, steamy rooms and a scrub.

Gyms and hotel spas also have steam rooms, but they are usually for members or guests only, so we leave them out.

Frequently asked questions
