What counts as a bathhouse here

A bathhouse is a place where you buy a day pass or a timed slot and move between several hot and cold rooms with other people: saunas, steam rooms, warm pools and cold pools. Private infrared suites are listed separately under infrared sauna studios.

The new social saunas

Since the early 2020s, a wave of social bathhouses has opened in American cities. New York has the most, with Bathhouse, Othership, AIRE Ancient Baths and others, and Bathhouse also runs a location in Philadelphia. Charlotte is the home of Sauna House, and Salt Lake City has Löyly Nordic Spa's walk-in sauna clubs and PLUNJ's sauna and cold plunge studios around the valley. They are co-ed, swimsuits are usually required, and some run guided sessions or aufguss in the sauna.

The old bathhouses

Many cities also have older bathhouses with Russian, Japanese or European roots. Kabuki Springs & Spa in San Francisco and Lake Steam Baths in Denver have long histories, and Russian banyas keep the hot room, the cold pool and the platza going in New York, Chicago and Boston. The Schvitz in Detroit still runs men's, women's and co-ed sessions.

Co-ed or single-gender, swimsuit or nude

House rules differ more between bathhouses than anywhere else. Some are fully co-ed with swimsuits, some have single-gender days or areas where people go nude. Check the listing before you go, and read our guide to what to wear in a public sauna.
