The Schvitz
Detroit
A historic North End bathhouse in a 1918 building, restored and reopened in 2020, with a rock-heated banya, a dry sauna with a Himalayan salt wall, a long cold pool and a restaurant upstairs.
More about The Schvitz
The Schvitz runs men-only, women-only and co-ed sessions on a weekly schedule, so check it before you go. During co-ed hours bathing suits are required; in the single-gender sessions swimwear is optional. Admission includes a locker and towels, and robes can be rented.
The banya is the heart of the place, a hot, humid room heated by a furnace and stones, with a dry sauna nearby and a four-foot-deep cold pool downstairs for cooling off between rounds. Upstairs a restaurant serves full meals, and platza treatments, massages and other services are offered. The crowd is mixed and social, and the vintage interior with stained glass and dark wood is part of the draw.
