What a hammam is
A hammam is a warm, very humid bath, usually with marble benches and a heated stone platform in the middle. The heat is gentler than in a sauna. The ritual is about washing: you sweat, then an attendant scrubs you with a rough mitt and black soap and rinses you off.
Where to find them
In the US, hammams are usually part of a larger bathhouse or a banya, such as Russian & Turkish Baths in New York, World Spa in Brooklyn and Archimedes Banya in San Francisco. Oasis Moroccan Bath near River Oaks in Houston is a standalone Moroccan hammam that sells bath rituals by appointment. See also the Russian banyas and steam rooms pages.
