Korean spas in New Jersey

North Jersey has some of the largest Korean spas on the East Coast, and they are the main reason people from Manhattan cross the river for a sauna day. King Spa & Sauna in Palisades Park is a full jjimjilbang, with an oak-fired kiln sauna, a run of clay, salt and mineral rooms, an ice room, separate men's and women's bathhouses and a Korean restaurant. SoJo Spa Club in Edgewater is the newer, more polished take, with eight themed saunas, an ice room, heated outdoor baths and a rooftop pool that looks straight at the Manhattan skyline. It is 18 and over, and day passes start around $110.

In Central Jersey, Island Spa & Sauna on Lincoln Highway in Edison has six dry saunas built from clay, rock salt and charcoal, an ice sauna and gender-separated bathhouses, with general admission at $55 on weekdays and no booking needed. At King Spa and Island Spa the shared floors are clothed (you get a spa uniform or loungewear), while the separate men's and women's bathhouses are nude. Russian banyas

New Jersey's banya culture sits in the suburbs. BRC Day Spa & Sauna Resort in Fair Lawn has a Russian wet sauna, a dry sauna, a Turkish steam room, cold plunges, a pool and a restaurant and bar. Bear + Birch in a Freehold office park centers on a very hot parnaya, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and a cold pool around 40°F, with a $60 day pass sold at the door and platza treatments on the menu. Infrared and cold plunge studios

Most of the newer openings are private-suite studios rather than social bathhouses. In Bergen County you can book infrared suites at Perspire in Wyckoff and Montvale, beem in Paramus and Infrared Light Sauna Studio in Midland Park, or pair infrared heat with a cold plunge at SweatHouz Edgewater and Enso in Englewood. The Plunge Room in Englewood and 490 Lab in River Edge are built around hot and cold contrast. SweatHouz also has studios in Garwood and Springfield, and at the Shore there are infrared rooms at 94 Wellness in Sea Girt and ChillRx in Red Bank.

Atlantic City

At Ocean Casino Resort, Exhale Spa sells a bathhouse day pass to people who are not staying at the hotel, with saunas, steam rooms, a jetted pool, a jacuzzi and a salt grotto. Passes are sold at the spa desk for the same day, and you must be 18 or older. See resort spa day passes in other cities.
