How Detroit does the sauna
The Schvitz on Oakland Avenue is Detroit's old-school bathhouse, a Russian-style banya with a hot room and a dry sauna at 180–200°F and a 46°F cold pool. It runs men-only, women-only and co-ed sessions, with swimsuits required when it is co-ed, and it has a restaurant on site. Admission is $40 and includes a locker and towels, and you can walk in without booking. Read what a banya is before you go, or compare Russian banyas in other cities.
The newer social saunas are close to downtown. Islandview Sauna Club on Beaufait Street is an outdoor club with wood-fired saunas at 160–200°F and 38°F cold plunges, booked in one-hour sessions for $25. Bask Detroit in Brush Park is a contrast club with a large Finnish sauna and plunge tubs from 37 to 50°F, at $60 for a drop-in session. In Corktown, Meta Physica Wellness Center rents private infrared sauna rooms by the hour.
In Oakland County, Perspire rents private infrared suites in Birmingham and Rochester Hills for $50 to $60 a session, and SweatHouz in Rochester Hills pairs an infrared sauna with a cold plunge in each suite.
