What a banya is

A banya is the Russian bathhouse: a very hot, humid room heated by a stove packed with stones, a cold pool or a bucket of cold water, and long breaks with tea and food. The hot room is called the parilka. Read what a banya is for the full ritual.

The platza

The platza, or venik treatment, is the banya's signature. Someone beats and brushes you with a bundle of soaked oak or birch leaves in the hot room. Most banyas sell it as an extra.

Where the banyas are

New York has the oldest and the most, including Russian & Turkish Baths in the East Village and several in Brooklyn. Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas and Detroit each have at least one, and New Jersey has BRC in Fair Lawn and Bear + Birch in Freehold. The Russian Banya of Dallas in Carrollton pairs its parilka with a Russian restaurant next door, and The Schvitz in Detroit has a restaurant of its own. Several banyas also have a Finnish sauna, a hammam or a steam room, so they show up on our bathhouses and steam rooms pages too.

Before you go

Old-school banyas often keep separate days for men and women, some take cash only, and most sell food and drinks. Bring flip-flops and a felt hat if you have one, to keep your head cool in the parilka.
